The London Congestion Charge came into force on 17th February 2003, and the tariff was increased on the 4th July 2005. Vehicles travelling into the congestion zone have to pay £8 per day between 7am and 6pm, Monday to Friday (excluding public holidays).
You can pay the Congestion Charge either in advance or on the day of travel before, during or after the journey or by midnight the following charging day. The charge is £8 if you pay by midnight on the day of travel or £10 if you pay by midnight the following charging day (you can pay the following charging day via the call centre and website only).
You can pay your Congestion Charge for more than one day at a time by, for example, paying for a week, for a month or even for a whole year in one transaction. You can pay your Congestion Charge up to 90 days in advance, or on the day you need it.
There are a number of ways to pay the London Congestion Charge:
Online: pay by credit or debit card via the website at www.cclondon.com. Always check your vehicle registration details are entered correctly.
Telephone: pay by credit or debit card via the TFL Call Centre on 0845 900 1234 which is open from 6am till midnight Sunday to Friday and from 6am till 10pm on Saturday. Always check your vehicle registration details are entered correctly.
Mobile phone text message: You can pay the charge on your day of travel by sending a simple text message from your mobile phone (you need to pre register for the SMS service), with your credit or debit card details. Retail outlets: pay in cash at newsagents, convenience stores and petrol stations where you see the congestion charging sign or the PayPoint logo (some retailers may also accept payment by cheque and credit or debit card at their discretion). Self-service machines: pay by credit or debit card at self-service machines in major public car parks within charging zone and other selected locations. Always check your vehicle registration details are entered correctly.
